Post-Exposure Treatment NHS Lothian Bat bites anywhere in the world – apart from the UK and Ireland – are considered high risk for rabies. In the UK and Ireland, the risk is low. Potential rabies exposure should always be assessed promptly. UK: If there is any chance you have been exposed to an animal infected with rabies, you should contact NHS 24 on 111 or phone your GP to ask for an urgent appointment. Abroad: If you’re abroad you should seek medical care immediately. Don’t wait until you return to the UK before seeking care. If you have sustained an injury abroad and have started post-exposure treatment, call NHS 24 on 111 to make an appointment at one of NHS Lothian’s Minor Injury Units for your follow up treatment.
